The Benefits of Orthodontics

There's More to Orthodontics Than Straight Teeth.
Bracing You for the Future
Although one's facial appearance can certainly become improved as the result of creating a harmonious relationship between the teeth, jaws, and face, many don't realize that orthodontics can also help alleviate a host of other problems, thereby improving the life and health of the patient. Patients most often experience improvements with issues concerning jaw joint discomfort (TMJ disorder), normal chewing, swallowing, breathing, speech problems, and perhaps especially with self-confidence.

Straight Teeth = Healthy Mouth
Straight teeth also improve overall oral health since straight teeth are much easier to clean and floss. Straight, clean teeth and gums are instrumental in avoiding periodontal problems often caused by difficulty in cleaning. Our clinical team is devoted to helping our patients maintain good oral hygiene throughout their treatment. They also work with our patients to educate them in the technique and overall care of their braces.

Additional Benefits of Orthodontics

'Occlusion' refers to the way the top teeth fit in harmonious relation to the bottom teeth

  1. When the proper occlusion (relationship between jaws, teeth, and face) exists, there is less opportunity for food impaction, brushing is easier, and the teeth may be flossed properly thereby reducing the incidence of tooth decay, gum disease and even the early loss of teeth later in life.

  2. In some instances, speech problems may result from malposed (misaligned) teeth and jaws. This misalignment may also stem from habits such as thumb and/or finger sucking, lip biting, or mouth breathing caused by obstructions in the respiratory tract.

  3. A child that does not chew his food properly because of poor occlusion may develop digestive problems which are likely to affect the general health of the body.

  4. From a social psychological standpoint, protrusive and malposed teeth can be detrimental to ones self esteem. As the appearance improves, self-confidence most often grows.
